The commander of the Australian-led peacekeeping force in East Timor says he is prepared to disarm and contain rebel soldiers if authorities ask him to do so.
Asked if the peacekeepers were prepared to step in, disarm rebel soldiers and contain them to prevent violence from escalating further, Brigadier Michael Slater said: "We have the military capacity to do that when the time is right"....
..."If anyone acts independently... but does something that doesn't seem acceptable to all parties, then we run the risk of creating more turmoil than what we have already seen."...
...Brig Slater says peacekeepers are engaging the rebels in talks and are in constant communication to prevent violence from rising further.
"We've got people up in the hills in a number of areas," he said.
"We have direct contact with each of [the rebel leaders]."

Brigadier Slater says it is not difficult for the troops to persuade militia members to give up their weapons.
"They want to do this, they want to resolve the problems that they've got," he said.
